1818 Opera House pioneers sustainability with walkable photovoltaic floor

News

Historic Teatro Real has been named a finalist for the prestigious International Opera Award 2025 in the Sustainability category. T

his significant nomination places the institution on the global stage, honoring its revolutionary energy retrofit project that masterfully blends 21st-century technology with 19th-century heritage.

The nomination recognizes what many considered an impossible challenge: making a protected cultural landmark, with construction dating back to 1818, a model of energy efficiency. This is more than a renovation; it is a feat of engineering that has integrated modern energy generation directly into the historic fabric of the building without compromising its architectural and patrimonial values. The project's success serves as a powerful argument for the Teatro Real's candidacy, showcasing it as a pioneer for cultural institutions worldwide.

The technical core of this achievement, which underpins the award nomination, is the installation of 2,198 units of walkable photovoltaic glass from the Spanish company Onyx Solar. This innovative solution allowed the opera house to convert its surfaces into a clean energy power plant with an installed capacity of 169 kWp. The system is expected to generate 190 MWh annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 263 tons per year.

Nuria Gallego, Director of Infrastructure and General Services at the Teatro Real, highlighted the institution's commitment to the project's quality and long-term vision. "We have delivered on our commitment by using the highest quality materials, and our goal is to become a net-zero energy building," she stated.

The project's global relevance and claim to the award are further strengthened by its official recognition as the first Cultural Heritage Building (BIC) in Spain to be registered under the national system of Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs). The ambitious initiative was backed by €5.3 million from the Next Generation EU program.

The institution's pursuit of excellence is also reflected in its artistic endeavors, receiving additional nominations for Best World Premiere and Best Director, contributing to a remarkable total of 12 nominations at this year's awards.
