Ethical Power partners with Varco Energy for the Sambar Power storage project
Ethical Power and Varco Energy (Varco), a pioneering UK-based battery storage asset owner and operator, are pleased to announce their partnership to deliver the 47.5MW Sambar Power battery storage project in Cornwall.
Ethical Power’s high-voltage grid connections arm will be providing the Balance of Plant (BoP) work to install the battery energy storage systems (BESS) equipment chosen by Varco, as well as the electrical, mechanical and civil infrastructure required for the connection of the asset to National Grid’s transmission network.
Ethical Power and Varco have already partnered on several battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK, including the Native River project, a 57MW/138MWh transmission-connected BESS south of Liverpool and the Sizing John project, a 57MW/138MWh transmission-connected BESS south of St Helens.
These assets are situated within particularly congested parts of the UK’s high voltage grid so will be able to provide localised balancing and stability services to the National Grid system operator, as well as broader load shifting to enable high penetration of renewable generation across the UK system.
By helping to integrate renewable energy generation and balance the grid, projects like this make sustainable energy accessible and affordable for all consumers.
Rachel Ruffle, Chief Operating Officer at Ethical Power:
“Ethical Power is delighted to partner with Varco Energy for the installation and connection of this grid-scale battery asset. Projects like Sambar Power are vital for grid stability and the continued expansion of renewable energy in the UK. We are looking forward to delivering the project safely, to programme, and ensuring highest quality standards are maintained.”
James Mills, Director, Varco Energy said:
“At Varco we are committed to investing in assets that will accelerate renewable integration, sustain a resilient grid and drive consumer value in the UK. We are therefore delighted to be working in partnership with Ethical Power to deliver this 47.5MW project in the UK, with the intention to bring the asset online by Q2 2025.”
