Germany Achieves New Record Solar Capacity in 2024
More than one million new solar installations occurred in Germany in 2024 according to the country’s Federal Network Agency
Germany’s photovoltaic expansion continued in 2024 with over
one million new solar installations, achieving a record capacity of more than
16,000 MW (2023: 15,500 MW). According to the Market Master Data Register
(MaStR) maintained by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), the nation’s total
installed solar capacity surpassed 99,200 MW by year-end, potentially nearing
100,000 MW with additional registrations.
Between 2022 and 2024, approximately 40,000 MW of new solar
capacity were added, nearly equaling the entire total installed between 2011
and 2021. This growth is attributed to cost reductions in photovoltaic
technology and increased public engagement.
Small-scale systems, particularly balcony power plants (up to 2 kW), saw significant growth, with registrations rising 41% to over 430,000 in 2024 (2023: 305,000). Medium-sized systems (2 kW to 30 kW) also remained popular, with approximately 575,000 installations contributing around 6,100 MW last year. Large-scale photovoltaic systems experienced notable expansion, with 370 new plants (2023: 270) and an added capacity of 5,100 MW (2023: 3,400 MW).
Germany’s Federal Network Agency stated that these findings are based on data from December 28, 2024, and reflect a ‘snapshot’ of the market. Retroactive updates or corrections to the installation register may cause minor statistical adjustments, but do not alter the overall trends.
